The holidays are coming up and what are the holidays without the classic side of mac and cheese? This is the best stovetop mac and cheese recipe and it’s perfect for holiday gatherings or a simple side to go along with dinner!

I was always called a weird child because I hated mac and cheese. It wasn’t until later in life when I tried my best friend’s grandmother’s recipe that I fell in love with it! This is the recipe that won me over! So let me introduce you to, what we affectionately call, “Grannie’s Mac and Cheese”.

Recommended Materials:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups elbow pasta

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

  • 1/8 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

  • 1/4-1/2 cup whole milk

  • Pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Cook pasta according to instructions on the box and add salt if desired (I personally don’t add any because the cheese makes it plenty salty for my taste!)

  2. While the pasta is boiling, slowly melt butter in a saucepan

  3. Add the two cheeses to the butter and stir until the cheese begins to soften a bit

  4. Start with adding 1/4 cup of milk to the sauce pan and whisk. Slowly add more milk while whisking continually until desired consistency is reached (I typically end up adding maybe a splash more milk after the initial 1/4 cup. It makes a stringy consistency that is still runny enough to stick to the pasta)

  5. Season to taste. (I usually only add pepper because the cheddar cheese makes it salty enough for mine and my family’s taste)

  6. Add the cooked and drained pasta to the cheese sauce, stir, and try not to eat the whole pot in one sitting!

Notes:

  • Any small pasta should work for this. I just like to use elbow pasta for an authentic “macaroni and cheese” look!

  • For a less stringy cheese sauce, use less mozzarella or leave it out completely.

  • For a thinner sauce, add more milk.
